I think Bob doesn't have a hobbing machine, but wants to cut a worm gear using a lathe or milling machine. I suppose the idea would be to let the gear "free wheel" on a support of some kind, and feed the cutter in axially, assuming that the cutter would mesh with and turn the blank as it cuts. I'm very skeptical that it would work, but there may be someone who has tried it and can let us know what happened.
