I have an old leblon lathe 40's. the gear driving the lead screw is in need of replacement. i would like to mill a new one on my bridgeport. but i dont know what type of steel to make it from. the gear apears to be soft at least according to a file. i have found no information regarding soft gears. im thinking 4140 but can i get a reasonable surface finish with 4140? for the milled spaces will remain the finish.
