Heat treatment is no longer traditional methods like heating and quenching, or gas carburising or pack carburising -which involve heating up to 900 to may be 1100 degrees C. Latest technologies like Plasma (ion) nitriding can work well at 450 degrees C, thus no significant distortion or warpage occurs, not even in microns. Bayside Parker group world class manufacturers of high precision gearboxes mention their in-house facility for plasma nitriding as one of the major causes for their leadership in precision gears.
