Dear Joel I sent this message by e-mail-no reply Recently I became aware of Meshingwithgears and I have tried to use the assistance of Bill Simpson to find a market for my gear design software which the much diminished UK gear industry do not seem prepared to look at. Through Bill a brief contact with a US company also came to nothing- on receipt of the software they also reacted like the UK and did NOTHING- no reply or acknowledgement. I believe that I have a powerful tool and I have taken your query of 9th September 2007 to try it out. Basically on their website you were asking for an extreme design manipulation and according to my software it needed unusually large helix angles to solve. My main experience in the use of my software has been on straight spurs or low helix gears and the solution I offer for your ( by now academic) interest is so unusual that I cannot totally guarantee, as it may involve cutter problems ( interference etc) of which I am not aware. Anyway for the record I attach files which draw the gear pairs in AutoCAd format and list the basis gear and measurement data. The gears are drawn in transverse section with no backlash or tip relief etc, The roots are however exactly as generated ( in theory) by a hob with no tip radius) - any tip radius can be accommodated. I would be interested to hear whether your solution bears any resemblance to mine and I would be pleased to attempt ( FOC) any other gear problem you may have to try to gain some credibility. My software cover straight spurs, internal and external, and helicals, racks stub gears and involute splines and shows the rotating gears or the hob or shaping process in animation. It is particularly useful in gear centre manipulation and offers much advice on the avoidance of undercutting and interference. I can send you a demo version of the program if required. Regards Colin Wyatt
