Hi Ron,
I wrote last night, but it was rejected. You say that the marks are gray. This problem is quite common. What is happening is the back of the cutter is hitting on the opposite tooth as the back off mechanism is releaving. The first thing to do is to make sure you are hitting into your (4) points. Back the work table away, and remove your guards so you can get in there. Take a round hone and make sure there isn't any dings or burrs on the (4) points. Take a flat hone and do the same to the matting part, using a rolling motion. Wipe clean, and apply red lead to the (4) points, apply bluing to the matting part. Don't use so much that it smears. Bring work table in and clamp and run for a minute. Open and swing work table away, check bearing. They must be equal in a pattern. If not you must correct this error. It may be the bronze plate is worn on top? if so grind it flat and shim, make sure work table is sitting on it by red leading it, there must be a good pattern. Now when this is corrected you then check with red lead and bluing on the angle block. Make adjustments to your angle block and make sure it is rubbing evenly across both angle and block.
Ron, you didn't say how much shake you are getting out of your Cutter spindle or your work spindle?
Ron, let me know when you have completed the above, then we will do a bit more. Wishing you a great day with your Fellows 36-6

Bob
